Use Of A Probability Calculator
Using this calculator, you can convert the "odds for winning" an event and the "odds against winning" an event into percentage chances of winning and losing.
If you see that the Patriots super bowl odds are 9/2, that is most likely "odds against" and should be entered in the calculator as "Odds are: against winning.".
You should understand the odds or probability that are reported by the game organizer when playing a lottery or other game of chance. In this calculator, a probability of winning of 1 in 500 is entered as "1 to 500 Odds are for winning". It may be reported simply as a chance of winning of 500:1. This indicates that "500 to 1 odds are against winning" which is exactly the same as "1 to 500 odds are for winning."
Formulas For Probability:
You can use this calculator to convert "odds of winning" into a probability percentage chance.
The odds are expressed as (chances for success) : (chances against success).
The probability of winning is given as PW = A / (A + B), while the probability of losing is given as PL = B / (A + B).
A full deck of 52 cards has a chance of winning if you pull an ace from it. If you pull any other card, you lose. The chances of winning are 4 out of 52, while the odds against winning are 48 out of 52 (52-4=48). Using A=4 and B=48 in the calculator, you get the odds of winning of 4:48.
The odds of winning range from 4 to 48;
The likelihood of:
The winning percentage is (0.0769) or 7.6923%
The loss is (0.9231) or 92.3077%
The odds of winning are 1:12 (down from 4:48).
"Odds against" winning: 12:1 (down from 48:4)
